Our Little Advent Oratory

| |

You remember I was reading the great book about prayer spaces? And needing to update our prayer table? “The Little Oratory” is a must-have, in my opinion, for any Catholic family’s library. We have been “doing” a prayer table for years, but reading this gave me inspiration to keep the prayer table as a focus in our home, simple ideas (and art prints!) to beautify and decorate the space, and overall a deeper appreciation for family prayer.

Well. I finally have our space prettied up. It only took months and months. I love it. I took advice from the book and used two of the prints, framed them, and hung them on either side of the crucifix. The symmetry is so appealing and soothing, isn’t it? After I finished the embroidery, I added lace and then layered it over blue and gray patterned fabric.

For Advent, we have tea lights on a white plate, and a framed St. Andrew novena prayer. It was a simple update for the season.

What do you think? What have you done for your prayer spaces?

  1. beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!! I just love everything about it, but especially the embroidery! (did you design it yourself?) You created such a clean, focused, inspiring space – the perfect household altar! I really love it (Wait, did I already say that?? 😉 ) We don’t have a prayer space / family altar in our home, but I’ve thought about it frequently, and now you’ve got me convinced I’d like to make it a priority. Thanks for sharing this, Gina! Happy and blessed Advent!

  2. Love it! I’ve read my way through most of the book but we still haven’t found a space that would work well for a prayer table/shelf. I’m thinking of clearing off a shelf on one of the bookcases for it.

  3. Love everything about your space. It looks so peaceful, simple, and beautiful. And, please don’t take simple the wrong way 🙂 I find simple to be incredibly beautiful allowing for less distraction and more presence. Hope we can get something together soon. We don’t have an exact place where it wouldn’t be a bit awkward. So hopefully we figure something out 🙂

  4. This is so lovely, Gina! You have a beautiful little oratory! I have my copy of the book, but have yet to read it. It’s on my to-read list!
