“…there is something holy, something divine hidden in the most ordinary situations, and it is up to each one of you to discover it.”  St. Josemaria Escriva, Passionately Loving the World

This week, we’re back to school. Back to homeschool. Back to more regular chores. Back to plans and back to ditching the plans. As we all know, I can come up with a pretty mean plan, and I also have no problem whatsoever throwing it out the window when life says so.

I won’t lie. It’s not butterflies and rainbows trying to get back into our routine. I wake up late because I’m still waking up with Firecracker, (our weaning goes s-l-o-w-l-y). The boys wake up on time, but then they quickly start rough-housing with each other (no problem there) and then cross over the line of “this is fun!” into “waaaah!! He punched me!” The girls wake slowly. Eat slower. By 9 am when I wish we were all ready for our morning prayers and memory work and read-aloud, I’m still wrangling the minions to gather up and get dressed. 9:30 rolls around and we’re finally together, though at least 2 of the 4 older kids have frowns on their faces.Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

I take a deep breath, we light the candles, and sink into the arms of our Father in our morning prayer. Sometimes we stumble through; my 5 year old still can’t get the words quite right on the Our Father or Hail Mary, even though we’ve prayed them together hundreds and thousands of times. We come to the end, and typically those few short moments in prayer have started to transform us already.

And so, my ordinary really is ordinary, but certainly never boring. Never, ever boring. I don’t even know anymore what that feels like.

  1. “not butterflies and rainbows!” I hear ya! Your morning sounds a lot like mine. What a beautiful picture you paint, though, of how a crazy morning is transformed in prayer. Your dedication to your kiddos IS a prayer! <3
    Love the pictures!

  2. Haha, OH my goodness! Your morning sounds just like mine minus 3. Weaning Eli is still happening SLOWLY and I end up staying in bed till he finishes which is usually when Joseph is waking and then cloths, teeth, food food food, what’s next. I love the pizza too and Yay for 52 kiddo photos! I’m so excited!
